The Project
Over the next couple of weeks try to find out all you can about the role of the magician and wizard in different societies and different times around the globe. What do wizards or magicians do and seek to achieve? How do their societies view them? What do you think? Do you believe that magic works and, whatever your view, what do you base it on? There are no right or wrong answers and the course does not seek to push you into one way of thinking or another. We just ask that you research the topic and arrive at your own conclusions.
Some magicians you might like to find out about are Israel Regardie, William Butler Yeats, Chic and Sandra Tabatha Cicero, Aleister Crowley and Lon Milo Duquette. Famous fictional wizards to research are Merlin, Gandalf and Harry Potter.
What I could come up with…
In many of the articles I’ve read, a magician and a wizard are regarded as one in the same. Two articles explained otherwise: "In modern use, the distinguishing aspect for wizards from other magicians is that their abilities were based off of knowledge, rather than faith. This is not to say that wizards did not invoke religion, but it was usually done through secret techniques and rituals as opposed to only prayer"; "Depict magicians as identical to wizards except for being inferior in skill and training."
A magician, in my eyes, is one who performs acts unusual to normal human functioning / beyond human reasoning. For entertainment; performing illusions & hiding things on one’s person; pull a rabbit out of an empty hat / cause a dove to appear out from underneath a cloth kind of thing.
Common depictions of wizards inclue a man with a black top hat, black cape, white shirt & red tie, with nice black shoes on. And maybe a mustache, lol. Common items seen with a magician may be a cane, handkerchief, mirror and a white rabbit, among other items that may be used to perform "tricks". Wikipedia describes a magician as: having "the ability to attain objectives, acquire knowledge, or perform works of wonder using supernatural or nonrational means."
A famous magician is Aleister Crowley. He is known for using the "scientific method to study what people at the time called spiritual experiences, making ‘The Method of Science, the Aim of Religion’ the catchphrase of his magazine The Equinox. By this he meant that mystical experiences should not be taken at face value, but critiqued and experimented with in order to arrive at their underlying religious or neurological meaning." He believed that magick was available to anyone who would be willing to study & practice: "Magick would yield its secrets to the infidel and the libertine, just as one does not have to be a churchwarden in order to discover a new kind of orchid. There are, of course, certain virtues necessary to the Magician; but they are of the same order as those which make a successful chemist."
A wizard brings to mind the idea of a magickal person performing healing, making potions and spells that glow unnaturally. In the case that the ruler of a kingdom isn’t having much luck getting what he needs done, he would ask a wizard to perform a spell, with the hopes of supernatural powers aiding his path.
Common depictions of wizards include an elderly yet possibly ageless man, wearing a brightly colored robe and pointed hat which may be adorned with stars and moons, astrological symbols, or with magical spells. Common items seen in traditional pictures include a crystal ball, cauldron, bottles of potions & a wand. Wizards may also be accompanied by animals, which may act as familiars, and may be able to communicate with these animals either verbally or nonverbally.
Most fantasy wizards are depicted as having a special gift which sets them apart from the vast majority of characters in fantasy worlds who are unable to learn magic. The wizard can be portrayed as good or evil; usually good, where he is seen as wise and acting as a mentor. Also, they can act the part of the absent-minded professor, being foolish, prone to misconjuring, though generally less than dangerous. They tend to have a limited amount of magical ability (mana).
